Highland Games 2012: The European high-fliers in Bressuire
There will be high-fliers and new faces at the European teamed Championships to take place in Bressuire on June 9th and 10th.
12 athletes from 10 nations: what a colorful mosaic their flags will form!
A star-studded cast
The federation has selected 12 of the currently most titled European athletes, including the top 4 from the 2011 European Championship held in BUK in Hungary (photo).
And guess what?
The top seed, the Dutchman Pieter BOUMA, winner of last year’s amateur European Championship, will be teamed up with the Bocker Amine AMROUN.
Local hero
Amine is Bressuire’s local Highland Games hero and winner of the French Championship in 2010 and 2011.
Amine has already had the honour of representing France in Hungary in 2011 (photo). In that competition, his European debut, he finished in 14th position.
No doubt about it, June 9th and 10th will see a star-studded cast of athletes perform at Bressuire Castle.
Just take a look:
Team 1 : Jonathan KELLY(Ireland) and Grant SINCLAIR (Scotland)
Team 2 : Pieter BOUMA (Holland) and Amine AMROUN (France)
Team 3 : Daniel DOROW (Germany) and Tarmo MITT (Estonia)
Team 4 : Adam DARAZS (Hungary) and Martin SCHILLER (Austria)
Team 5 : Casba MESZAROS (Hungary) and Oscar BRUGEMANIS (Latvia)
Team 6 : David FRAY (Germany) and Janne HARTIKAINEN (Finland)
Only one modification to the original line-up: the Belgian Jimmy Van de WALLE has withdrawn for family reasons and has been replaced by the German Daniel DOROW who came 4th in last year’s championship.
The public in Bressuire will be able to relish the performances of most of the athletes who shone at the European Championship in Hungary last year – six of the first seven will be present at Bressuire Castle.
There, in teams of two, they will get to grips with their usual adversaries: the hammers, the stones, the weights and of course, the caber.
In other words, for the space of a weekend, Bressuire will be home to the crème de la crème of European Highland Games. So make a note of it in your dairy, sorry, in your diary – June 9th and 10th – and come and lap it all up!
