Masters and Class B: Foreign victories in Luzarches
To vaguely follow the adage,” age before beauty”, we will begin with the Masters.
On the field were 8 Frenchmen and 1 German and the victory went to the odd man out: the German Lauro GRUDA, who accumulated only 8 points with two victories and three second places, thereby becoming the Meister of the Masters.
Belkacem SMAHI, the only athlete from Bressuire in this category, and Eric ALAGILLE, his Luzarches rival, vied with one another for second place.
After being pipped at the caber post by Belka at the French Championship last August, Eric took his revenge by totting up 14 points, even winning two events: the stone and the weight for distance.
Belka was not far behind, coming second in the weight for height and the caber, and third in the stone and weight for distance.
But his fifth place in the hammer event gave him a total of 15 points relegating him to the third step of the podium.
Foreign legion too much for the French
In category B, the Frenchmen found themselves up against a strong foreign contingent composed of 3 Germans, 2 Dutchmen and 1 Scot.
Given his nationality and his name, it came as no surprise when the competition proved a walkover for Greg WALKER the Scot whose score was 12 points.
The German Martin KUHNE came second with 14 points.
And in third position with 19 points – the Bressuire Bocker Amine AMROUN.
As for the athletes from St Michel sur Orge, relative newcomers to the Highland Games scene, they can be proud of themselves: Thomas TALLET finished fifth with 28 points and won the weight for height event.
Kennedy PEREIRA came sixth and won a thunder of applause when he tossed the caber better than all his rivals. Like a plane at Kennedy Airport, the caber took off, sailed through the air and made a perfect landing, bang on time at twelve o’clock!
In the face of strong competition, the Bressuire team as a whole put on a lacklustre show: the MAGNOUX brothers finished 14th and 16th, Philippe MIGNET 13th, and Sébastien PIZON 11th.
Let’s hope that their young rivals from St Michel sur Orge will urge them on to more sparkling performances next season!
