Weight over the bar: a Hansome ovation

Not a description of a Highland Games athlete in a pub but an event which can be compared to pole-vaulting. The object of the exercise is to throw a 56 pound weight over a bar beginning at a height of 3.60m.

Each athlete has three goes after which the bar is raised by 30 cm.

Hans Lolkema notched up a height of 4.65 m – not enough to beat Woult Ziljstra’s 5 m Bressuire record of 2007, but enough to win him a “handsome” standing ovation.
